Officer Friendly

On Friday, Arlington Heights Police Officer Veenstra came to our class to give a safety presentation. He reviewed with students what strangers are and how there are both good and bad strangers. He encouraged students to think about which type of stranger would be the best to go to should they ever be in an emergency. Interaction with online strangers was another key topic that he addressed. Students were taught the importance of never sharing personal information with anyone online. They also learned about bullying and how to stand up for themselves.

Ethan Long - Author/Illustrator Visit

Author and illustrator Ethan Long visited Dryden this past Thursday. He engaged students with his energy-filled presentation. Mr. Long demonstrated his process for creating and developing characters. We were even lucky enough to read one of his soon-to-be published books! Thank you to Dryden PTA for providing us with such a fun and educational experience!

Extra Exercise for Character Counts

The students recently filled up our class pillar with 200 smiley faces, which means that they did a wonderful job of keeping their six pillars each week for Character Counts. As a result, the students earned a class reward. Since the students worked so hard to keep their pillars, I allow them to choose what they would like as a reward. The class voted and the students decided that they wanted to have extra time playing games in the gym. Last week we played indoor soccer and Capture the Football. What a fun and healthy way to celebrate our great behavior!

Art Appreciation

The students participated in their first Art Appreciation lesson this year. Mrs. Wascher, Mrs. Neumann, and Mrs. Walker taught the students about tapestries. The students then had the opportunity to try a little finger-knitting. Many students were eager to show off their colorful creations!

Veteran's Day

The students participated in an assembly honoring our nation's honorable and brave veterans. The scouts performed a flag ceremony and all students joined in singing "This Land is Your Land." After the assembly our class was fortunate enough to have a veteran volunteer to talk to the students about his experience in the Vietnam War. Mr. Phillips presented us with information about the B-52 Bomber and taught us about his responsibilities in the Air Force. The students eagerly listened to his stories and asked questions. We are very thankful for all who have and continue to serve our country!

Beauty and the Beak

We read an inspirational article today about a bald eagle who received a prosthetic beak after being injured by a poacher. Below is a video showing her amazing journey.

Sofia's Adventures with Swinger

SOFIA and SWINGER’s WEEKEND ADVENTURE

THE FIRST AFTERNOON WITH SWINGER
After you guys said bye to Swinger. Me and Swinger went to Ashlyn’s house and we had girl scout cookies and boy Swinger ate lot of Trefoils. He had like 6 or 7 cookies. I guess Singer really likes vanilla. After a chuckle or two I introduced Swinger to Kya and Sydney. Mrs. Ferguson took us to make and paint pottery.

My mom picked Swinger and me up and we went to Randhurst Village and ate at Chipotle. He even took a few bites of my taco when I wasn’t looking.

Once we got home Swinger met the rest of my family my little brother Jacob and my Dad. Swinger was nervous so he slept in my room.

SATURDAY
I played with neighbors and Swinger joined all the fun. We played hide and go seek, soccer and watched TV. When we came in my mom made us hot chocolate and Swinger drank some of mine. We pulled out our holiday decorations and I caught Swinger flirting with the angel. I can see why he did that my angel has a lot of sparkles. I was shocked.

SUNDAY
My dad had a great idea and invited us to breakfast. Swinger joined us and loved my chocolate chip pancakes at Eggperience.

He watched me do my homework and even let me read to him.

We played outside again with my neighbors Ryan, Charlie and Dino. The sun set and Swinger did not want to take a bath. We had to push him in the “tub”.

My family really enjoyed having Swinger having around and we hope he can come back and visit soon.

Addie's Adventures with Swinger

I did not take swinger anywhere on Saturday  but I took swinger  to do stuff on Sunday. First, I played barbies with him. Then, I went to pet supplies  plus with swinger. After that I bathed with him, and yes I bathed with him. We both  went in the bathtub together, but back to the story. Oh and I forgot that we had a mini dance party before I bathed with him. Then after swinger got out of the drier, we played spot it. Swinger didn't really participate he kinda  just laid on the table. Then when it was time for bed and I was sitting on my bed with swinger, I brushed swingers hair. So that was my sunday with swinger! (P.S sorry my story was so short!

I had a birthday party on Sat. so I kinda forgot about him. sorry!)

October Student Challenge

Twelve students completed the October Student Challenge!

This past month’s Student Challenge was a real TREAT! Students used goodies from their Trick-or-Treating to complete four different activities. Students created a bar graph to show how many pieces of candy they received, filled in a Venn diagram to compare and contrast two different candies, researched the history of various candies to create a timeline, and used their creativity to write a candy story! Scroll down to read these fun stories.

Farewell Crabs!

We had a terrific time observing and learning about our hermit crabs these past few months. It is sad to see Godzilla and Gracie leave, but we look forward to hearing about all of their new adventures!

Hallway Displays

If you haven't had a chance to see the displays in the hallway outside our classroom you can check them out here:

Little Blue's Adventures with Travis

Little Blue started his adventure with me at C.A.P.S. We were hanging out by the painting in the gym. Then, later that day we went Trick or Treating in downtown Arlington Heights. We saw Sofia, Nate, and Noah. We took a picture when we took a break from all of the walking.

The next day we went to gymnastics at the Buehler YMCA. We took a picture on the Pommel Horse together. Little Blue was sitting in the middle while I was doing a front support. It was cool. Later that day we went Trick or Treating and I got lots of candy. Little blue was in the car nice and dry with mom while I walked with my sister around the neighborhood. It was great! That evening we watched Scooby Doo and ate candy together.

Finally, on Sunday we went to volleyball. We watched Heather’s team win. I was playing on my Nintendo 3ds and Little Blue was on my lap. At the end of the game we took a picture and Little Blue was sitting on top of a yellow volleyball.
