September Student Challenge: Function Machine
Each month the students will have the opportunity to complete a “Student Challenge!” I will propose a challenge for the students to complete that focuses on a concept or topic we are learning in class. They will have at least one week (and sometimes several weeks) to submit their answers, research, or projects to me. If they accurately complete the challenge, their names will be added to our Student Challenge bulletin board. For each challenge that they complete, a star will be added next to their names! The Student Challenges are completely optional, but highly encouraged. It provides students with the opportunity to use their creativity and presentation skills. Those students who complete the monthly Student Challenges will have the opportunity to share their work with their classmates and it will be featured on our blog.
This month's challenge: Create your very own function machine! Show your family and friends how it works, and then bring it to school to show your classmates! Please turn your function machine in by Tuesday, October 6th.
The above video is a sample of the function machine that I made and showed the class today.

WEX Writing Excerpts
Every two weeks or so I will be posting new writing excerpts from our WEX writing unit. These featured pieces of writing exemplify the skills that we are practicing in class. After hanging the excerpts, the class determines which skills were demonstrated and why each piece was selected for our "Monster Journal Excerpts" board. We already have twelve wonderful examples of the use of descriptive words, showing details, and exaggeration. Way to go writers!

Emma and Flipper's Extravaganza
Flipper came to spend the weekend with me! Here are our adventures.
Saturday
Today is my little brother Ryan’s birthday party! Flipper bounced in the bounce house higher
than me! He ate some snacks and some
party food and he still bounced higher than me!
He played bean bag toss and of course, he won. He wins everything! He is a smart penguin. Next, Flipper ate some birthday cake. Flipper said, “Agh, I ate too much cake! Ow, I have a tummy ache!” After a fun party and all our friends went
home, Flipper went to bed with me.
Sunday
After we woke up, we played some Minecraft. Then Flipper ate some pancakes for
breakfast. (But he was still full from
the cake! Agh!) Then he got dressed in a warm sweater. Then he said, “This is too hot! Ugh!” and took off the sweater. Next we took a bike ride to the park (but
Flipper didn’t wear his sweater). At the
park, Flipper swung on the swings, did the monkey bars and went down the slide
so fast, I couldn’t even catch up with him!
Flipper and I built a fort, and he found a nut. He ate it and he said, “Agh, I am still
stuffed from the birthday cake!” Then
we rode our bikes home. Next we built a
Lego City park and he was the best at building Legos! After all this fun, he took a nice warm
bath. He liked to play with the
bubbles. After his toasty warm bath, he
did some magazine reading. When he went
to bed, he said, “Agh, I am STILL full from the birthday cake!”

Hallway Displays
We have had a busy first two weeks in our class! Please take a look at our current hallway displays.
Check out these juicy sentences!
The students used "juicy" words to provide their readers with a descriptive sentence. After reading the sentence, readers flip up the paper to see if they were able to visualize the same thing that the writer did.
