Partial Sums Algorithm

Parents: Everyday Math introduces many new ways to approach math that are oftentimes very different than the traditional methods taught while we were in school. Below is an example of how to use the Partial Sums Algorithm, which the students will use on their homework over the weekend and on the unit test.

Map Projects

As a culminating project, students created their very own countries! They carefully and creatively designed maps of their islands and presented them to the class.

Writing Excerpts

A few times each month students' WEX (writing) binders are collected and some strong samples of writing are displayed for the class to see. These "Monster Journal Excerpts" are read to the class and then hung on the white board. The children then discuss the strengths of these pieces, which serve as inspiration for future writing lessons.

Here is the first set of Monster Journal Excerpts:

September Student Challenge

Eight marvelous pupils completed the thought-provoking September Student Challenge, which required students to generate a list of extremely juicy words for each letter of the alphabet! These students discovered many incredible words that our class will try to use in our everyday speaking and writing. Congratulations to the participants: Robert, Paige, Ria, Margaret, Maya, Jake, Annabelle, and Victoria!

Flipper's Adventures with Jake

Flipper’s Adventures
By: Jake

On Friday night I took Flipper to my soccer game. It was cloudy and rainy and very cold. The soccer game was in Buffalo Grove. Flipper wanted to play the game but he had to stay with my mom. He stayed dry by sitting under the umbrella. For the rest of the weekend I went to Indian Guides. Flipper was very excited about going on a road trip. We went to a campground in Wisconsin. The first thing Flipper did was to help me unpack the truck. We set up our bunk bed and laid out our sleeping bag. Then Flipper helped us make the fire. At the end of the night Flipper slept with me. In the morning when we woke up we had breakfast and then we went to the bb gun range and the archery range. We even went canoeing in the lake. Then we packed up to go home. We had lots of fun together.

Not only did we receive postcards from Wisconsin, Tennessee, and Illinois, but we were also sent a postcard all the way from Scotland! Please thank friends and family for helping us with our exciting Race Across the States Project.
